Group Ambassadors by Jaanga is a Marketplace app designed for admins to delegate group membership management by nominating trusted “Ambassadors.” We’d been seeing many of our Data Center customers making the migration to Cloud, but we were really surprised to find so many new Cloud customers finding their way to us after migration from Atlassian Crowd. Truth be told, we’d built the solution, but hadn’t realized just how perfectly it matched the delegated group management Crowd folks loved. Turns out, sometimes you make the right thing before you even know what problem you’re solving!

Why the Need for Group Ambassadors

When organizations move from Atlassian Crowd Data Center to Atlassian Cloud, they lose critical group management features—specifically the ability to delegate group membership control to non-admins. Atlassian has deprecated certain group attribute synchronization and delegated administration capabilities in Crowd, with no direct Cloud equivalents. This creates a gap for enterprises with distributed team structures that relied on delegation for timely access changes and user management.

How Group Ambassadors Works

  • Administrators can nominate or revoke Ambassadors, granting selected users the ability to add or remove group members.
  • Ambassadors manage group membership quickly, reducing the admin workload and ensuring accurate access control across teams.
  • Every membership change, nomination, or revocation is logged for compliance and tracking.
  • Optional features let group members browse their memberships or export group member lists, making group visibility and reporting much simpler.
  • Group limits, usage in projects, and bulk operations streamline management for large organizations.

Benefits for Cloud Migrators

  • Returns critical Crowd functionality for decentralized user group management in the Cloud.
  • Increases security by allowing controlled delegation without full admin rights.
  • Boosts efficiency, letting IT focus on strategic tasks while Ambassadors handle day-to-day group updates.
  • Integrates directly into Jira and Confluence Cloud, supporting organizations during and after migration.
  • Group Ambassadors is an ideal tool for Crowd Data Center customers who need to maintain delegated group management processes after moving to Atlassian Cloud. Its secure, scalable approach ensures organizations don’t lose flexibility or oversight after their migration.

Thanks to a healthy dose of customer curiosity (read: outright panic calls), we connected the dots. The real “aha!” wasn’t in what we built, but in the fact that it bridged a major functional gap for countless organizations making the leap to Cloud and suddenly missing crucial ways to trust team leads, project owners, and distributed admins to help manage user access—without giving away the keys to the whole kingdom.

That’s the story: Group Ambassadors was always ready and waiting, but it took the collective cloud migration adventure to realize it was actually the perfect Crowd feature replacement. The best part? Now every newcomer gets a smoother cloud landing, and we get to save the day with a smile—thanks to everyone who reached out and helped us see our app, and their challenges, in a whole new light.
